This is a sugar cookie that my kiddos love eating, and is almost fool-proof for little fingers.
There are a few tricks involved, though.
1. Roll out your cookie dough directly on the pan (or on parchment/wax paper, and you can transfer the whole shebang onto your pan after step 2.)
2. Cut out your shapes (relatively close to one another)
3. Place a shape cut from vellum or cardstock onto your sugar cookie dough
4. sprinkle a good amount of colored sugar onto your cookie and spread it around with your fingers (this is where the kids love their job) and pat it down into the dough
5. dust off excess sugar, into a bowl
6. remove vellum and bake
